Background:
The National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City, Inc. (NAMI-NYC) is a peer-based and -led grassroots organization that helps families and individuals affected by mental illness build better lives through education, support, and advocacy. As one of the largest affiliates of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI-NYC works collaboratively with state and national affiliates, and with stakeholders in the community, to educate the public, increase awareness, advocate for legislation, reduce stigma, and improve the mental health care system. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, NAMI-NYC touches the lives of over 23,000 people a year through its full portfolio of programs and services, virtually, in person and all free of charge.

NAMI-NYC’s staff and volunteers understand the complexity of mental health issues because they, too, have lived with or supported a loved one with mental illness. This experience allows the staff to convey what they have learned to those who seek out NAMI-NYC’s services through peer-led evidence-based education classes for individuals, family and friends, as well as support groups on a variety of topics e.g., suicide bereavement, criminal justice, and parenting children and young adults. Classes and support groups are available in English and Spanish. NAMI-NYC also offers stigma reducing education programs throughout NYC, and a robust advocacy initiative that empowers individuals to use their stories and voices to improve the mental health system.

NAMI-NYC has experienced significant growth in the past five years – an increase in budget from $1.6M to $4M and staff growth from 12 to 25. Demand for NAMI-NYC’s services and the concomitant impact in the community keeps growing.  In the third year of a three-year strategic plan and a focus on dramatically increasing the budget and the number of people served, the organization recognizes that it must also grow its fundraising capacity. To facilitate this growth, NAMI-NYC is looking to hire a Director of Development to join the senior leadership team and manage the evolution of the development department.  They will be an accomplished fundraising leader and strategic thinker who will use their knowledge of best practices and strong management experience to build fundraising momentum as well as ensure that effective development operations are in place.

Position:
As a thought partner to the Executive Director, the DOD will be responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive and sustainable fundraising plan that will allow NAMI-NYC to not only increase fundraising, but that envisions a strategy for growing a development team and implementing effective and efficient development systems.  The DOD will work closely with both the Director of Individual Giving and Director of Events to build and maintain a funding pipeline of major donors and diversify the funding stream. The DOD will oversee institutional fundraising, sustaining multi-year partnerships, while identifying and cultivating new ones. The DOD will also create ways for the Board to become more involved in supporting fundraising efforts, boosting the culture of fundraising within NAMI-NYC.

Specific Responsibilities

Working closely with the leadership and staff of NAMI-NYC, the DOD will:

  • Provide vision and leadership for all aspects of NAMI-NYC’s fundraising program, integrating fundraising best practices across all levels and types of giving
  • Partner with and support the Executive Director and Board of Directors to advance NAMI-NYC’s fundraising goals, positioning and supporting them for donor cultivation
  • Working collaboratively with the rest of the leadership team, identify and craft funding opportunities that align with the interests of donors in the portfolio and the organization’s strategic priorities
  • Create strategies for success, set appropriate development goals and milestones, and implement benchmarking and progress measurement procedures
  • Modernize development operations and execute a best-practice Moves Management program that builds and manages the pipeline, supporting a streamlined and scalable development effort – this includes tracking prospect and donor contacts with appropriate follow-up
  • Apply innovative fundraising tools to take advantage of growth opportunities
  • Manage an effective development operational infrastructure by creating and executing efficient systems and procedures
  • Promote an organization-wide culture of philanthropy, including among the board and committee members, creating ways for everyone to become more comfortable in support of fundraising efforts
  • Together with the Director of Events, advance donor relationships from event participants
  • Support the Director of Individual Giving to build a growth-oriented major gifts program
  • Create briefing memos, presentations, and other materials for donor meetings and reports
  • Oversee institutional giving, identifying cultivating and sustaining multi-year partnerships
  • Together with the Director of Marketing and Communications, find and target new audiences for fundraising purposes
  • Prepare an annual development budget and ensure that budgeting supports the organization’s mission and strategic plan, as well as efficient and effective use of resources 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree; minimum 8 years professional fundraising experience
  • Track record of success in developing and implementing scalable fundraising plans, as well as cultivating and stewarding donors
  • Systems-oriented and data-driven leader with well-honed fundraising operations skills, including the ability to critically evaluate fundraising efforts
  • Strong management skills and experience cultivating and building a team of committed and achievement-focused professionals
  • Analytical, organized, proactive, detail-oriented with strong ability to prioritize
  • Outstanding oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to interact professionally with internal and external stakeholders who have diverse backgrounds, professional skills, and perspectives
  • Creative, strategic thinker with excellent project management and cross-functional fundraising skills
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizations and funders, particularly in New York City
  • Strong follow-through with the proven ability to set and meet deadlines and benchmarks
  • Able to work effectively as part of a collegial and collaborative team
  • Deep, personal commitment to the mission and vision of NAMI-NYC
  • Sound judgment and a strong sense of social justice and activism
  • Must be a self-starter and independent worker with an entrepreneurial spirit and strategic growth mindset

This is a NYC-based role with a salary in the range of $175k.  This is a hybrid position, approximately 2 -3 days in office or more as needed.
